Magnet Theater Blog
The Magnet Training Center is a pretty special space. We moved in while it was still the home of Mike Nichols acting school, The New Actors Workshop, which he founded with Paul Sills (the son of Viola Spolin) and George Morrison.
And we got to spend about six months occupying the same space.
The improv roots run deep in these rooms. For over 20 years, New Actors taught acting, improvisation, voice and movement as an integrated system. Original games from Improvisation for the Theater were interwoven with acting systems developed by Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, Sanford Meisner, and others. Nichols, Morrison and Sills saw improvisation as a necessary component in actor training and essential to the development of their craft. CLICK TO READ MORE…

FREE OPPORTUNITY TO GET ON STAGE AND PLAY!
The Magnet Mixers are shows occuring throughout the week where anyone from superstar to first time improviser can sign up and play on The Magnet stage. Magnet students past and present join improvisers from all the world over and non-improvisers who just want to play, forming rare and wonderful one-night-only combinations. The Magnet Mixers are often hosted by resident house teams, and always feature a fun and supportive environment for anyone to get on their feet and make people laugh through improvisation.
Magnet Mixers occur four times a week. The regular mixers are:
Wednesdays at 11:30pm (sign ups at 11:00pm)
Thursdays at 7:00pm (sign ups at 6:30pm)
Saturdays at 12:00am (Midnight) (sign ups at 11:30pm)
There is also the weekly musical mixer, featuring accompaniment, where students, performers, and strangers come together to improvise musical scenes. The Musical Mixer is:
Tuesdays at 10:15pm (sign ups at 9:45)
Come and play, you might get to do a scene with the olde-timey card player lady in the picture.
