If you’ve ever found yourself fixated on some absurdly detailed and equally useless bit of information – like the decomposition cycle of a whale, the Bristol Scale, the Catholic Church’s categories of demonic possession, or the political platforms of republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum – then you’ve already got something in common with the stellar cast of Search Engine.  With shared roots and experience dating back as far as The Deconstruction and 4 Track, they’re guaranteed to provide you with one of the most invigorating, entertaining and downright fun hours of your weekend – specifically at 8:30pm on Friday, January 13.

Starting with a suggestion from the audience of anything you wish you knew more about – perhaps Lepufology – Search Engine will go to work sharing what they know. Meanwhile, the Search Engine Research Assistant in the booth – that’s right, they’ve got a Research Assistant! – will be searching the web for a relevant YouTube video. The discussion and the video will inspire a series of scenes, occasionally punctuated by pertinent wikipedia entries, related trivia, more videos, or other information discovered by the Research Assistant throughout.

Search Engine has assured me that each member of the cast is either chock full of trivial but true information about the world, or naturally able to be confidently and completely wrong in their assumptions. Chances are good that you’ll leave knowing at least as much as you did when you arrived, with laugh-induced soreness in your abdominal region.

Search Engine debuts at The Magnet Theater on Friday, January 13 at 8:30pm. Reservations are highly recommended.

MEGAWATT – Wednesdays 8:00PM, 9:00PM, & 10:00PM

MUSICAL MEGAWATT – Tuesdays 8:30PM

What is Megawatt?

Megawatt is a weekly showcase of the Magnet’s signature house teams! Six of the teams perform every Wednesday and two musical teams perform every Tuesday.  All Megawatt performers have graduated from the Magnet Training Center and are lead by a Magnet assigned director.  Megawatt teams perform a variety of forms, styles, and structures – all of which are fueled by hilarious improvisers playing at the top of their intelligence.

Megawatt!

Bob SmokingLaurie and Chris

How can I participate?

To be considered for a Megawatt team, you must complete all six levels of the Magnet Training Program.  Likewise, for Musical Megawatt, you must complete all three musical improv core classes.  After completion, you become eligible for an invitation to audition.  Auditions are held periodically throughout the year. As you complete Level Six, you will find out more information about the audition process and the next audition scheduled.

Russ started improvising during high school in Ann Arbor Michigan.  There, he and his friends formed a group that they believed to be very “high brow,” but looking back, they are now pretty sure they mostly just made up fart jokes and mocked their principle.  Since then, Russ has come a long way, honing his craft at iO and Second City in Chicago before making The Magnet Theater his improv home base.

As a teacher of long-form, Russ tries to keep it positive.  He emphasizes physical and emotional focus.  His objective is to get everyone on board and be okay with playing together. Russ also likes to incorporate tons of metaphors into his teaching.  For instance rather than just tell you to “follow the fear,” as most improv teachers might, Russ, a native of Indianapolis, might quote racecar driver Mario Andretti. “If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough.”

Russ is currently teaching Level 2: Intro to Longform improv.  Check out a listing of our available classes on the Magnet Theater website.
