The multi-talented sketch writer/performer, improviser, and head of Musical Megawatt, Michael Lutton, sits down with host Louis Kornfeld to discuss what makes for good musical improv and how it can benefit “regular” improv. He talks about the advantages of pushing boundaries when no one is looking and provides advice for improvisers looking to learn musical improv outside of NYC. This one is all about selling it in the moment.

We’re excited to announce our new additions to Musical Megawatt, New Team Hall and New Team Oates! Both teams will be debuting Tuesday, April 1st at Musical Megawatt, where there will be Magnet drink specials and an after party at Walter’s (389 8th Ave).
Auditions for Musical Megawatt teams will be held on Saturday, March 29th. To audition, you must have completed Musical Improv Level 3 at the Magnet. To schedule an audition, fill out THIS FORM no later than Monday, March 17th. You will receive your official audition time on Thursday, March 20th. We look forward to seeing you there!
Along with an evening of stellar musical improv from Magnet’s musical house teams (College, The Jezebelles, Wonderland, Legend, and Aquarius), every donation you make will earn you a tasty treat from our homemade snack sale, and a chance to win great prizes in our raffle including bottles of wine, Magnet tickets, fancy jewelry, scented candles that smell like and were made by members of Wonderland, and much much more.
Funds raised from the snack sale and raffle will benefit the 10,000 people living with MS in the five boroughs of New York City, Orange, Rockland, Sullivan, Putnam, and Westchester Counties by funding comprehensive programs and services for people with MS as well as ongoing research for the cause and a cure. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. The mission of the National MS Society is to mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS.
Laugh, sing, and dance in the face of MS! Shows at 7PM, 8PM, and 9PM. Raffle drawings at the end of each hour! Musical mixer at 10:15PM. If you cannot attend, please consider making a donation here!
On Tuesday, November 19th Magnet will host the first ever Musical Mustachewatt. The night will be the typical Musical Megawatt affair (with Jezebells, Aquarius, Wonderland, and Mint Condition) however throughout the night we’ll be taking donations to go towards the Movember.
Movember is more than just a bad pun putting together November and Mustache. It is a month long movement where men grow mustaches to show support of men’s health. Unfortunately, science has not found a way to turn mustaches into the cure for cancer. In the mean time we are raising money to go towards the Movember Foundation, the Live Strong foundation, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. For more information on what organizations are benefiting from Movember and how you can help out even more, check out the US Movember website.
Movember has grown into a friendly competition between men to see who can grow the best mustache and who can raise the most money. Everyone starts clean shaven on November 1st and does their best to grow a full “Burt Reynolds” and raise a ton of money.
We know it’s hard to just throw your money at something. So in exchange for your donation towards men’s health you can grab some delicious home made treats made by the Musical Megawatt performers! In the lobby there will be a bake sale! From tradtional sweets to mustache inspired munchies, you’re donation will get you some serious goodies.
Come out and support musical improv comedy, men’s health, and those poor souls who can barely grow even a “John Waters” above their lip. Shows at 7, 8 and 9pm. Bake sale all night long.
The Magnet is thrilled to announce our new Musical Megawatt lineup! Come by this Tuesday when all six teams will perform to kick off the new season!

BEEES!!! turned 2 earlier this year! They are celebrating with a Two-Year Anniversary Show this Friday, March 29th, at 7pm, and you are all invited!
Formed in late December 2010, BEEES!!! gathered for the first time as a team at Mooncake, a few doors down from the Magnet Training Center. Over dinner and cheap Sapporo beers, they got better acquainted with one another. Some had taken the Magnet musical improv classes together, and were nervous and excited to be placed on their very first house team; others were seasoned performers, with years of improv and stage experience under their belts. What they all had in common, was their musical improv training under the brilliant Tara Copeland and Frank Spitznagel. BEEES!!! hit the Magnet stage for their first show on Tuesday, January 4th, 2011.
(Team Trivia: Michael Lutton came up with the team name, which won the majority of the votes, over gems such as “7 O’Clock,” “The Richard Cheddar Show,” and “Employee of the Month.”)
Since then, BEEES!!! has performed regularly on Magnet Musical Tuesdays, survived two hurricanes (Irene and Sandy), won five Inspirado challenges, and performed in theaters and improv festivals throughout NYC and along the East Coast, including The Depot Theatre, Boston Comedy Arts Festival, North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival, NYC Improv Festival, and the New York Musical Improv Festival.
BEEES!!! is happy and proud to call the Magnet Theater home. Come this Friday, March 29th, at 7pm and join them in celebrating 2 years of making beautiful musical improv together.
BEEES!!! is: Jamie Cummings, Michael Lutton, Desireé Nash, Steve Whyte, Catherine Wing.
Congratulations to the BRAND NEW MUSICAL MEGAWATT TEAMS! Both teams premiered Tuesday, March 12th to an incredibly warm Magnet audience. The new teams are:
