Come hear the latest about the Magnet Theater and Training Center.  We’ll talk about highlights from 2012 and things to look forward to in 2013.  This is an open forum for students and performers to connect with Magnet teachers, managers and other people that run things or make decisions.  This will also be a great way for performers and students to learn about recent changes, current initiatives and upcoming projects and opportunities. Lots to discuss. All are welcome. Including you.

The Evente is not the easiest form out there, in fact it can be quite difficult to understand at times.  It begins with one central event, suggested by the audience, and builds from there.  The forms utilizes flashbacks and time jumps, all while focusing on relationships surrounding the event. Created by Armando Diaz in the late 90’s, it is part of the “wild wild west improv movement” that Diaz created when he started the Magnet in 2005.

Check out the above chart  that will help you understand Evente better!  And if you’re looking to study the form with Alex Marino, the next session starts February 2nd!  More info!

Tuesday, November 6th, Musical Megawatt is going to be FREE if you bring one of these items:  blankets, candles, flashlights, batteries, canned non-perishable foods and the following toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes and ziplock bags.  Sarah Puls (Mint Condition) is organizing this with the Red Hook Initiative (http://rhicenter.org/tag/hurricane-relief/).  There will be a drop off place in the lobby.  If you can’t make it tonight, The Magnet will be holding more Hurricane fundraisers in the near future, stay tuned!

Hurricane Sandy has caused a lot of damage and made a lot of people homeless. It has been a really difficult time for so many people and I want to do what I can to help out. So I am going to raise money by attempting to coach and teach Improv and Sketch for 24 hours straight. YES THAT IS RIGHT! I’M GOING TO TRY AND TEACH AND COACH FOR 24 HOURS IN A ROW. All money raised from this Marathon will be donated to the Red Cross.

WHEN IS IT?
Saturday, December 1st at noon through Sunday, December 2nd until noon.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Well, aside from teaching a couple of my regular classes on Saturday, we are offering slots around the clock that you and your improv group can bid on and get coached by me. In those slots we can work on whatever you want. I am at your disposal.

BIDDING
Bidding starts on Tuesday, November 6th at 11 am and will end at Sunday, November 25th at 6pm. Bids will be tallied and winners will be announced on Monday, November 26th after 12 noon. LET THE BIDDING BEGIN!

And on Saturday Dec. 1st AT Midnight there will be a DROP IN CLASS JAM. (Minimum suggested donation is $10 at the door) Groups and individuals welcomed.

And on Sunday, December 2nd from 10 am to 12pm there will be a FREE IMPROV TRIAL CLASS. If you or your friends have been wanting to try improv and don’t mind being taught by someone with a hoarse voice, this is the class to attend.

So if you have always wanted to be coached by me or you just want to see if a man can teach improv non-stop for 24 hours then please join me for The Armando Diaz Hurricane Relief Teaching & Coaching-athon, Sat 12/1 – Sun 12/2. And please help spread the word.

Sincerely,

Armando Diaz

Ladies and Gentleman, it’s HERE!  The Magnet Theater presents The Fourth Annual New York Musical Improv Festival from October 4-7!  Over 100 performers from as far as Toronto, Los Angeles, Chicago and as close as Broadway, will converge on the Magnet Theater stage to create fully improvised musical performances – ranging from traditional musical theatre fare to adrenaline-pumping rap battles.  All performances take place at The Magnet Theater, the center for musical improv study and performance in the U.S.

Featured performers will include…

Baby Wants Candy (NYC), Jill Bernard’s Drum Machine (HUGE Theatre, Minneapolis, Minn.), Tara Copeland (Los Angeles), Jeff Hiller (Los Angeles), Diamond Lion (UCBeast, NYC), Shakespeare: The Musical (UN-Scripted Theatre Company, San Francisco, CA),  Mansical (Chicago), Trudy Carmichael’s Musical Mixer (Las Vegas/NYC), Choral Rage (Magnet Theater, NYC), and MORE!
On Sunday, October 7, 2012, the Festival will present a special performance to benefit Gilda’s Club of New York City to raise funds and awareness for people living with cancer.  The benefit will feature many of the top musical improv artists in the country.  Learn more about this star studded event here!
Tickets for most shows are $10+ and include performances by two different musical improv acts per show. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com or by phone at 800-838-3006. See schedule on www.nymif.com for details.  We’ll see you at the shows!

Saturday, July 28th marked the Magnet Theater’s second Ladies Night. From 7pm – 11:30pm the stage was set for only those with X chromosomes. Hosted by Magnet’s Artistic Director Megan Gray and Registrar Kim Ferguson, the shows featured over 50 female performers from all over the city, improvising, reciting poetry and putting on a sketch show.

The 7 & 8pm blocks featured female improvisers from Magnet, The PIT and UCB, in mixed combinations you have probably never seen before (except in your dreams). The Magnet was packed to capacity, as 9pm brought a special :Kiss*Punch*Poem: Ladies Night edition — all female poets and all female improvisers.

Finally, 10:30pm marked the Lady Sketch Show. Directed by Beth Newell, the show featured over 20 actresses, performing sketches written by 8 female writers. Over the past 6 weeks, all of the ladies of the Lady Sketch Lab have been working tirelessly, writing, rewriting, and blocking until it reached ultimate perfection. If you missed this life-changing sketch show, return to the Magnet Saturday, August 25th at 7:30pm to see a special encore performance.  It was a great evening, with great shows, see you next Ladies Night!
