We are now accepting applications for The Circuit!  How does The Circuit work?  Glad you asked, every Friday night at 10pm, three Circuit teams perform the Harold at the Magnet Studio Theater. Teams exist for three months – enough time to perform a good amount of shows before the next round of Circuit teams replace the current ones.  Circuit Teams are made up of Magnet Theater students who’ve completed up to Level 3, graduates of our Training program and veteran performers.  We believe that in order to get better at improv, you need to do it.

The Deadline to apply is October 31st.  Teams will be announced November 5th, 2012. The next round of Circuit shows will begin November 9th, 2012. Teams will alternate weeks through the end of January 2013. If you have any questions, please email Circuit@MagnetTheater.com.

The Magnet Training Center is a pretty special space. We moved in while it was still the home of Mike Nichols acting school, The New Actors Workshop, which he founded with Paul Sills (the son of Viola Spolin) and George Morrison.

And we got to spend about six months occupying the same space.

The improv roots run deep in these rooms.  For over 20 years, New Actors taught acting, improvisation, voice and movement as an integrated system.  Original games from Improvisation for the Theater were interwoven with acting systems developed by Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, Sanford Meisner, and others.  Nichols, Morrison and Sills saw improvisation as a necessary component in actor training and essential to the development of their craft. more

The Magnet is hosting a special round of auditions for a Second City improvisation touring company that will play aboard Norwegian Cruise Line Ships.  If you have graduated from The PIT, UCB or Magnet’s Training program here in New York, you are eligible to audition.  Here are the details:

Second City Theatrical is seeking actors for Second City ensembles aboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Contracts are for 2011. The Second City (based in Chicago and Toronto) has been the sole sketch comedy and improvisation provider for NCL cruise ships since January of 2005.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 1 from 10AM to 6PM, Callbacks are Wednesday February 2, time TBD

WHERE: Magnet Theater Training Center, 259 W 30th Street, FL2

To submit, email your headshot and resume ON JANUARY 3-6, 2011 to auditions@secondcity.com with the subject: “NY ship auditions.” Expect an email reply with information (audition time, decline, etc) on Jan 10 or 11.

The Second City is seeking graduates of improv programs (e.g. The Second City, UCB, Magnet, PIT, etc)

Auditions will be held in half hour increments with groups of eight, and will be completely improvised.

Please bring a current headshot and resume with updated contact information (we will phone you, not your agency).

Please dress in something akin to performance clothes (how you would dress for a Second City performance).
