MAGNET IMPROV LAB

Finding it difficult to commit to an eight week session? Then this is the class for you! Feel free to drop in to any of these workshops with Mark Grenier.

Experiment with improv in ways that complement your classes. Each week the Magnet Improv Lab explores the fundementals of long-form improvisation and introduces advanced exercises to challenge improvisers at any level.

Without props, sets or costumes the improviser has the freedom to manipulate an audience’s perception of space and time to a degree limited only by his or her imagination. In this 4-week class students will explore the great potential of the empty space. The class will play with transformations, split scenes, swinging doors, journey scenes, morphs, novelty edits and more to expand and heighten scene work and piece dynamics.

NEW!!! AUDITIONING FOR TV AND COMMERCIALS with T.J. Mannix NEW!!!
Put your improv skills to work in the entertainment industry and learn the art and business of auditioning. In other words, learn how to get paid to do what you love.
This class will cover the ABC’s of auditioning. Topics to be covered include: the mechanics of auditioning on-camera, working with sides, finding the right monologue, preparation, documenting your audition experiences for networking and growth, the business of the business: headshots, resumes, agents, casting directors, theatre, unions (Equity, SAG, AFTRA), showcases, working for free, and networking. Students will also participate in mock auditions and work on-camera.Let's de-mystify what happens “in the room” – with a special emphasis on commercials, soap operas and prime-time television auditions.
8 Weeks Pre-requisite: Level 2 or equivalent. Limit: 12 Students

Special Guests - Students will have the opportunity to audition for agents and casting directors. Past guests have included Casting Director Tisha Ioli of Don Case Casting and Commercial Agent Suzy Friedman, founder of the Friedman-West Agency. After meeting the students in the mock audition at the Magnet Theater - Suzy Friedman is now freelancing with several improvisors.
Success Stories - After taking T.J.'s class - Parker Brown, Alina Chappotin, Binu Paulose, Jennifer Sanders and Adam Taylor have all been sent out on commercial auditions by Suzy Friedman.

This 6-week class for “improvisers who want to write” explores in-depth development of characters through stream-of-consciousness writing and improvising sessions. Over the course of the class you’ll develop numerous starting points for creating and developing characters including; environment, emotion, context, physicality, and hell, maybe even hats. Gary encourages experimenting, so bring your weird ideas. The focus will be on developing monologues for solo characters – finding that character’s voice and their story. HOW TO BE TWO FUNNY : This class is for two-person actor/writer teams looking to explore the writing, acting and producing of two person sketch comedy. Gary Rudoren, director of many two-person shows including "The Idiotic Death of Two Fools," gives out some inside tips on collaborating without killing each other, developing in-depth characters without killing each other, and crafting sketch comedy...without killing each other. Be prepared to write and improvise. Be prepared to experiment. Classes to have a maximum of 5 two-person creative partnerships and there will be a performance night where you will get to perform your stuff in front of people - some of whom you might not know!
