Peter Grosz (The Colbert Report) will teach the fundamental principles of sketch comedy, and will demonstrate how those principles are applied to various forms of sketch writing. Common sketch forms will be covered with a special focus on the craft of social and political satire, and how it is created on The Colbert Report (how to write The Threatdown, The Word, and other segments) and how satire can be employed in various other types of writing (character monologues, stand-up etc.)

Students will bring in assignments for class readings and analysis, not only with the goal of improving their sketches, but also to learn how to analyze and solve common problems on their own. Class lectures are grounded in real world examples of classic brilliant sketches from show SNL, Mr. Show, Nichols and May, Mad TV, Python, SCTV, Ben Stiller Show and others. NEW!!! SLOW COMEDY with Bob Acevedo NEW!!!
In the beginning there was only slow comedy. And it was really funny. And G-d said it was good. In this class you will learn how to improvise longer, deeper, more finely detailed scenes. We believe that if you can do slow comedy, then you can play fast, but not necessarily the other way around. You will learn techniques that lead to improvised scenes that organically build to a place where the comedy is based on something more than a simple joke. Students will learn how to do more with less, make important discoveries, listen and react to subtext, and surprise each other and themselves. 4 weeks of weekly classes followed by 4 weeks of weekly shows. Prerequisite is Magnet Level 2 or equivalent. Limit 14 students.
