NEW YORK, NY April 4, 2005 – Magnet Theater announces a variety of performances and special events Thursdays through Saturdays in April to celebrate the opening of its theater at 254 West 29th Street. Most shows are $5.

  • The first Magnet student improv shows, Evente and Slow Comedy, are on Thursday, April 14th, hosted by Armando Diaz.
  • Friday the 15th brings an exclusive preview of punk legend Jon Langford’s multimedia show The Executioner’s Last Songs, with Sally Timms, also of the Mekons, and Jean Cook.
  • Saturday, April 16th is a special marathon night of performances by ensembles from The Project, the beloved independent improv night produced and hosted by the beloved Terry Jinn, which will take up residency on Saturday nights.
  • Friday the 22nd brings a return of Beauty Love Truth, improv inspired by the music of guest Lianne Smith, hosted by Shannon Manning, followed by a set by Second City alum and other friends of the Magnet, hosted by Abby Sher and Ed Herbstman.
  • Friday, April 29th is the first of a monthly music and comedy show, imported from Chicago, called Son of Here Be Monsters, produced and hosted by the heartbreaking and funny rock star Chris Mills, also imported from Chicago.

New improvisation and writing classes have been added to the schedule, at the same grand opening rate of $199, and for those who want to try before they buy, Magnet Theater offers a free trial class. Classes are designed for beginners and advanced students, actors, comedians, artists, and anyone who just wants to have some fun.

The Magnet Theater was formed in March 2005 by Armando Diaz, Ed Herbstman, Shannon Manning, and Alex Marino, to teach improvisation and sketch writing, and to develop and present fantastic comedy shows and other diverse entertainments and art.
