FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 28, 2006 – Under the Influence: The process
is collaboration between poets and improvisers. The product is a
unique artistic experience. Each week, the cast of Under the Influence
invites a guest poet to read his or her original work. The actors,
unfamiliar with the text, then perform scenes inspired by anything
from a single word to an image to a tone that is set by the voice
of the reader. The result is a performance in which various artists
are truly affected by one another in a new way.
Under the Influence was created by Jean Villepique and Chicagoan
Sue Gillan, both alumni of Chicago’s Second City Mainstage.
The cast includes The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s
Dan Bakkedahl, Magnet instructor Tara Copeland, James Eason, Matt
Evans, Magnet instructor Rachel Hamilton, Melanie Hoopes, John Murray,
and Magnet instructor Jean Villepique. The show was first performed
at the legendary IO Theater in Chicago this winter, and is making
its debut in New York at the Magnet Theater. Past poets have included
CJ Laity, publisher and editor of chicagopoetry.com,
Pulitzer Prize nominee Maureen Tolman Flannery, and “poetry
slam escapee” Mars. Future guests here in New York include
Hal Sirowitz, Poet Laureate of Queens, Susan Gerardi of New York
Public Radio and Nick Flynn, winner of the PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award
.
Under the Influence premieres on Wednesday, April 12th
at 9:30 PM and runs each Wednesday through May 31st. Tickets are
seven dollars at the door and can be reserved in advance by calling
Magnet Theater at 212-244-8824 or visiting the website at www.magnettheater.com.
Magnet is located at 254 W. 29th St. between 7th and 8th Ave. Questions
